What a notary can and cannot do

It saves everyone time to be clear about this up front. A notary public verifieswho signed a document and that they did so willingly — nothing more.

What I can do

Confirm your identity against a valid, unexpired government photo ID
Witness your signature and complete the notarial certificate
Administer an oath or affirmation
Provide a credible witness arrangement where state law allows it

What I cannot do

Tell you which document to use, or what to write in it
Explain the legal effect of what you are signing — that is a lawyer's job
Notarize a signature made outside my presence
Notarize for a signer who cannot produce acceptable ID, or who seems confused, pressured, or unwilling

If a signing has to be stopped for one of these reasons, I will say so plainly and only charge the travel fee.
